Some places just don't let you go. Coral Bay, Cyprus is one of them. I spent three years living here — first in Kamares, then in Peyia, just above Coral Bay — and every time I think of this place, I'm hit by that specific mix of sea breeze, warm limestone and the smell of fresh honey pastries from the bakery down the road.

This isn't a polished travel brochure. This is what you'd get if you asked a local friend: real places, honest tips, and the kind of knowledge that only comes from actually living there.

Coral Bay Beaches — Everything You Need to Know

Coral Bay has two main beaches sitting side by side, and both are genuinely beautiful. Coral Bay Beach is the larger — fine-grained sand, gently sloping into crystal-clear water, with watersports, restaurants and big car parks right there. Laourou Beach is a little quieter with the same gorgeous water.

Both beaches are shallow and perfect for families. On the water activity front: jet skis, or parasailing — floating 100 metres above the Mediterranean with the entire coast below you. Unforgettable.

Pro tip: May, June and October are sweet spots — the sea is warm (21–24°C), the beaches aren't packed, and you'll have space to breathe.

Best Restaurants in Coral Bay & Paphos

The restaurant strip along Coral Bay comes alive at sunset — bars, live music, small shops, and some genuinely excellent food. My top pick for a special evening is Porto Antico, right on the waterfront. Order the fish platter for two, or the steak with chimichurri sauce. Exceptional.

Porto Antico: Always reserve ahead in high season. Fish platter for two or chimichurri steak are unmissable.

Up on the hill above Coral Bay, The Old Cinema and Peyia Tavern serve authentic Cypriot meze in rustic surroundings. In Paphos Old Town, Agora Taverne is the single best meze I've had anywhere on the island — reserve ahead.

Grocery tip: Philippos Supermarket in Coral Bay has everything — plus an incredible in-house bakery. Go early for fresh pastries.

Lara Beach & Sea Turtles — One of Cyprus's Best-Kept Secrets

From Coral Bay, head out to Lara Beach by 4x4, quad or buggy — regular hire cars are not permitted on this road. Alternatively drive to the end of the tarmac and walk: about 1.5–2 hours one way, mostly along the coastline. Every step is worth it.

Lara Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island. Between May and July, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Between September and November, the hatchlings emerge — watch for baby turtles in the early morning or late evening.

Turtle season: May–July = egg-laying. Sept–Nov = hatching. Early morning or dusk gives the best chance of seeing them.

Avakas Gorge & the Akamas Peninsula — Wild Cyprus

Lara Beach sits at the edge of the Akamas Peninsula, home to one of the island's absolute highlights: the Avakas Gorge. Several excellent hiking routes run through here — find them on Komoot. One heads-up: goats roam the clifftops above, so falling rocks are occasionally a hazard.

Hiking tip: Search "Avakas Gorge" and "Akamas" on Komoot for the best-documented routes with elevation profiles and reviews.

Sea Caves, the Edro Shipwreck & Coastal Walks

The coastline around Coral Bay is dramatic. Don't miss the Edro III Shipwreck — rusted and photogenic against jagged limestone cliffs and electric-blue water in the Sea Caves area. The coastal walk here is beautiful.

Further along, behind Cap St. Georges, a coastal path runs from the White Cliffs all the way to the small harbour at Peyia, with the church of Agios Georgios perched high above.

Paphos — Ancient History, Harbour & Hidden Old Town

Paphos is just 12 km away and worth visiting often. Between Kissonerga and the harbour, a brand-new beachside promenade makes for a perfect morning run or evening stroll.

But the real gem is the Old Town — narrow streets, bougainvillea overhead, small bars and restaurants in historic buildings. This is the Paphos most tourists never find. The Queens Avenue Mall has Zara, Mango and Bershka, plus small food shops and cafés for a quick break. Don't miss Jumbo — a huge discount store perfect for everything you forgot to pack: beach umbrellas, cool boxes, sunglasses, flip flops. Not glamorous, but incredibly useful and cheap. Best visited on weekdays.

Blue Lagoon & Latchi — Freedom on the Water

From the harbour at Latchi, join boat tours to the Blue Lagoon and Akamas bays — or hire a small speedboat yourself. All you need is a regular driving licence and some cash. We once spotted two dolphins on such a trip.

Speedboat hire Latchi: Standard driving licence + cash = your own boat. The bays are best seen from the water.

For hikers: park at the Rd to Fontana Amoroza car park and tackle the Aphrodite Trail or Adonis Trail. I've walked the Aphrodite Trail at least ten times. The Blue Lagoon isn't directly on the trail, but it's close by and the perfect way to finish — a short detour that's absolutely worth it. Non-negotiable.

Aphrodite's Rock & Pissouri Cliffs

On the road between Paphos and Limassol lies Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou) — mythologically the birthplace of Aphrodite herself. A dramatic boulder in the sea, surrounded by pebbly coves and towering cliffs. Visit outside peak hours for the best experience.

Wine, Mountains & Monasteries — Inland Cyprus

The village of Omodos is the most charming inland stop: cobbled alleys, a beautiful church, a lively market square and tiny wine shops. The Oenou Yi Winery nearby offers guided tours, wine tastings and cheese platters with a view that makes the wine taste even better.

For serious hikers: the circular trail around Mount Olympos (starting from Troodos) gives panoramic views over the Paphos Forest, all the way to Nicosia on clear days.

And if you visit only one monastery on the island, make it Kykkos. It sits above the forest and mountain ridges like something from a dream. Architecturally overwhelming, spiritually calming.

Three Years, One Island, a Lifetime of Memories

I've shared everything I know about Coral Bay and the wider Paphos region in this guide — not the polished version, but the real one. The taverna on the hill where no tourists go. The quiet Tuesday morning on Lara Beach. The dolphins that appeared out of nowhere off Latchi. The Kykkos Monastery at golden hour.

Cyprus isn't just a beach destination. It's an island with texture, history, wildness and warmth. Give it time, go off the main road, and it will give you back something you didn't expect.
